Introducing the New LHUSD K–8 Family ELA Resources Webpage

Supporting Lifelong Literacy, One Household at a Time

Lake Havasu Unified School District is excited to share a brand-new tool designed to help families strengthen literacy skills at home. Our K–8 Family ELA Resources Webpage brings together simple, practical strategies that parents and guardians can use to support reading, writing, speaking, and listening in everyday life.

This easy-to-use webpage was created with families in mind. Whether you want to better understand Arizona’s ELA standards or are looking for quick ideas to help your child grow as a reader and writer, this resource provides clear guidance and meaningful support.

On the webpage, families will find:
• A short video explaining Arizona’s ELA Standards in family-friendly language
• Strategies to boost reading, writing, speaking, and listening at home
• Tips to improve reading comprehension, no matter your child’s grade level
• Book recommendations and links to our ELA Units of Study so you can see what students are learning in class

These tools are designed to strengthen the partnership between school and home, giving families simple ways to build confidence, curiosity, and strong literacy habits.

We encourage parents, teachers, and students to explore the new page and discover how small, consistent practices can make a big difference in academic success.

Our NJHS students gathered to make tie blankets for the Western Arizona Humane Society and dog toys for the animals right here in Lake Havasu City. It was a meaningful way to get involved, donate something warm for the winter, and do good in our community. Thank you to everyone who helped — our furry friends appreciate the love! These will be delivered after Thanksgiving Break! 🐾❤️

Last Friday we hosted our Annual Spelling Bee with over 20 students competing — the contest heated up to round 8 with a back-and-forth among the top three before we found our winner. What a show of courage and school spirit!

The competition was fierce for first place, and we’re proud to announce our winners:
🥇 Otto — 1st place (regained his title!)
🥈 Brooklyn S. (7th grade) — 2nd place
🥉 Renee R. (7th grade) — 3rd place

Thank you to everyone — students, staff, and family — who cheered on our spellers. The audience made the event extra special!

A huge thank you to KOCR - Kids on the Colorado River! Last week, our 7th grade students had an unforgettable experience riding boats under the bridge (Dixie Bell and Dream Catcher). They learned about our community and the history of Lake Havasu City, they tested hypotheses with professors and college students, and experienced hands on learning. Our students also met with Lake Havasu Police Department, Fire Department, Aquatic Center Lifeguards, Park Rangers, Lake Havasu Marine Association members, and more — gaining valuable insight and making lasting memories. We are grateful to the incredible local businesses, community members, and sponsors who make these amazing experiences possible. We can't wait for the 8th grade trip! 🌟
